Hydrea (hydroxyurea) is a cancer medication that interferes with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. Hydroxyurea is used to treat several types of cancer, including leukemia, skin cancer, head and neck cancer, and ovarian cancer. Hydroxyurea is sometimes used in combination with other cancer medications. Hydrea may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. You should not use Hydrea if you are allergic to hydroxyurea, or if you have bone marrow suppression. To make sure Hydrea is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: liver disease; kidney disease; a history of cancer; sickle cell anemia (or trait); if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Hydrea can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormonal birth control (condom, diaphragm with spermicide) to prevent pregnancy. Do not breast-feed while using this medicine. Hydrea can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using this medicine. Hydrea is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old. How should I take Hydrea? Take Hydrea exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor will start you on a low dose of Hydrea and gradually increase your dose. Hydrea is usually taken two or three times per week. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions very carefully. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Your blood will need to be tested often. Your cancer treatments may be delayed based on the results of these tests. While using Hydrea, you may need frequent blood tests. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Hydrea. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
