Motilium (generic name: domperidone) is a motility agent used to treat a number of gastrointestinal disorders. It is available in tablet and suspension form, and is taken orally. Motilium is also available as an oral solution. Motilium works by helping the muscles of the stomach and intestines contract, and by increasing the movement of the stomach. It is used to treat symptoms of stomach disorders such as heartburn, nausea, and vomiting. Motilium is also used to treat bloating, belching, and fullness. Motilium is not for use in treating symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. Motilium may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What are the possible side effects of Motilium?

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

• severe or ongoing vomiting;
• severe or ongoing diarrhea;
• a sudden change in bowel habits;
• bloody or black stools;
• coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;
• swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet; or
• high blood pressure--severe headache, blurred vision, pounding in your neck or ears, nosebleed, anxiety, shortness of breath.

Common side effects may include:

• drowsiness;
• dizziness;
• diarrhea;
• dry mouth; or
• mild nausea.

What other drugs will affect Motilium?

Taking Motilium with other drugs that make you sleepy can worsen this effect. Ask your doctor before taking Motilium with a sleeping pill, narcotic pain medicine, muscle relaxer, or medicine for anxiety, depression, or seizures. Other drugs may interact with Motilium, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use now and any medicine you start or stop using.
