Skelaxin (metaxalone) is a muscle relaxant. It works by blocking nerve impulses (or pain sensations) that are sent to your brain. Skelaxin is used together with rest and physical therapy to treat skeletal muscle conditions such as pain or injury. Skelaxin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. You should not use Skelaxin if you are allergic to metaxalone, or if you have: a history of allergic reaction to Skelaxin; a bleeding or blood clotting disorder; a seizure disorder; a history of head injury or brain tumor; a metabolism disorder; or if you are pregnant. To make sure Skelaxin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: liver or kidney disease; a stomach ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding; a thyroid disorder; a history of drug or alcohol addiction; if you drink more than 3 alcoholic beverages per day; or if you have recently had a heart attack. It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Metaxalone can pass into breast milk and may cause side effects in the nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using this medicine. Skelaxin is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old. How should I take Skelaxin? Take Skelaxin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Skelaxin is usually taken 3 times per day. Follow your doctor's instructions. Take Skelaxin with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow it whole. If you use the oral suspension, shake the bottle well for at least 15 seconds just before each dose. Measure the oral suspension with a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup. The Skelaxin oral suspension (liquid) contains sucrose. Talk to your doctor before using this form of Skelaxin if you have diabetes. Call your doctor if your muscle symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse. Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze the oral suspension. Throw away any unused oral suspension after 60 days. What happens if I miss a dose? Since Skelaxin is usually taken as needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are taking the medication regularly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. What happens if I overdose? Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Overdose symptoms may include extreme drowsiness, slowed or shallow breathing, feeling light-headed, or fainting. What should I avoid while taking Skelaxin? Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase some of the side effects of metaxalone. Skelaxin side effects Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088. What other drugs will affect Skelaxin? Taking Skelaxin with other drugs that make you sleepy or slow your breathing can cause dangerous side effects or death. Ask your doctor before taking a sleeping pill, narcotic pain medicine, prescription cough medicine, a muscle relaxer, or medicine for anxiety, depression, or seizures. Other drugs may interact with metaxalone, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any medicine you start or stop using.
