What is Zudena?
Zudena is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. These drugs prevent an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 from working too quickly. The penis is one of the areas where this enzyme works.
Erectile dysfunction is a condition where the penis does not fill with enough blood to cause an erection. Zudena increases blood flow to the penis and helps men to achieve and maintain an erection.
Zudena is available in tablet form and is taken orally. It is usually taken with or without food as needed, about 30 minutes before sexual activity.
Zudena may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Important Information
You should not take Zudena if you are allergic to udenafil or if you take other medicines to treat erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), or vardenafil (Levitra).
To make sure Zudena is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- heart disease or heart rhythm problems;
- a heart attack or stroke;
- high or low blood pressure;
- pulmonary hypertension (unless you are also taking Zudena to treat this condition);
- a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia;
- a blood cell disorder such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia;
- a stomach ulcer;
- retinitis pigmentosa (an inherited condition of the eye);
- a physical deformity of the penis (such as Peyronie's disease); or
- if you have been told you should not have sexual intercourse for health reasons.
Zudena can cause a serious heart attack. Tell your doctor if you have heart disease or have had a recent heart attack.
If you have pulmonary hypertension and you receive Zudena for erectile dysfunction, your doctor may start you on a lower dose of Zudena and increase your dose slowly.
Zudena can decrease blood flow to the optic nerve of the eye, causing sudden vision loss. This has occurred in a small number of people taking a similar medication called sildenafil (Viagra). Most of these people also had heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or certain pre-existing eye problems, and in those who smoke or are over 50 years old.
It is not clear whether Zudena is the actual cause of vision loss.
Stop taking Zudena and call your doctor at once if you have sudden vision loss.
