What is Wellbutrin?

Wellbutrin is the brand name for bupropion, a prescription medication used to treat depression. It can also be used to help people quit smoking. Bupropion is an aminoketone antidepressant. It works by increasing levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, which helps to improve mood. Wellbutrin is available as a tablet, extended-release tablet, and an extended-release capsule. It's also available as a generic drug. Generic drugs usually cost less than the brand-name version. In some cases, they may not be available in every strength or form as the brand-name drug. Wellbutrin may be used as part of a combination therapy. That means you need to take it with other drugs. Wellbutrin is also used to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that occurs at the same time each year. The FDA has issued a black-box warning for Wellbutrin because of an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults. This risk is higher in people with bipolar disorder or who have a family history of suicide. Wellbutrin should not be used in people with a history of seizure disorder or an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. It's also not recommended for people with severe liver disease. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have, or have ever had: a seizure disorder bipolar disorder an eating disorder liver disease kidney disease a history of head injury or brain tumor a history of alcohol or drug abuse a family history of suicide Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Wellbutrin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breastfeed while taking Wellbutrin. You should not take Wellbutrin if you are allergic to bupropion or any of the ingredients in the medication. Do not take Wellbutrin if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or have taken one within the past 14 days. MAOIs include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others. Do not take Wellbutrin if you have used an MAOI within the past 14 days. SNRIs include desvenlafaxine, duloxetine, levomilnacipran, milnacipran, venlafaxine, and others. Do not take Wellbutrin if you have taken a medication called a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) within the past 5 days. Antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors in children, teens, and young adults. However, depression and certain other mental disorders are themselves associated with increases in the risk of suicide. People of all ages taking antidepressants should be watched closely for signs of worsening depression and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The FDA has issued a black-box warning for Wellbutrin because of an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults. This risk is higher in people with bipolar disorder or who have a family history of suicide. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially bleeding and seizure risk. Wellbutrin is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Wellbutrin and gradually increase your dose. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet or capsule. Swallow it whole. If you cannot swallow a tablet whole, you may open the capsule and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of applesauce. Swallow right away without chewing. Do not save the mixture for later use. Bupropion may be taken with or without food. The extended-release tablet (Wellbutrin XL) is usually taken once daily in the morning. The extended-release capsule (Aplenzin, Wellbutrin XL) is usually taken once daily with breakfast. Do not take more than your prescribed dose. Overdose symptoms may include seizure (convulsions), feeling extremely agitated or restless, or fainting. If you miss a dose of Wellbutrin, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses of bupropion at the same time.
