Prazosin is a drug that is used to treat high blood pressure. It is also used to treat heart failure. Prazosin is in a class of drugs called alpha blockers. Alpha blockers lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. This makes it easier for the heart to pump blood. Prazosin is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It may be used alone or with other blood pressure medications. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Prazosin is also used to treat congestive heart failure, by reducing the amount of work the heart has to do. Prazosin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. You should not use prazosin if you are allergic to it, or if you have: a blood disorder such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia; a history of low blood pressure; a history of fainting; if you are also taking a heart medication called quinidine (Quinora, Cardioquin, Quin-G); or if you have ever had an allergic reaction to another alpha blocker such as terazosin (Hytrin), doxazosin (Cardura), tamsulosin (Flomax), alfuzosin (Uroxatral), silodosin (Rapaflo), or an "azole" antifungal such as ketoconazole (Nizoral) or itraconazole (Sporanox). To make sure prazosin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: a history of heart disease or congestive heart failure; a history of stroke or blood clot; a history of kidney disease; a history of depression; or if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin). It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. You should not breast-feed while you are using prazosin. Prazosin is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old. How should I take prazosin? Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Prazosin is usually taken once daily with or without food. Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. If you have high blood pressure, keep using prazosin even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure medicine for the rest of your life. Do not skip doses or stop using prazosin suddenly. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using prazosin. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. You should not use prazosin if you are allergic to it. Prazosin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
