What is Reminyl?
Reminyl (generic name galantamine) is a cholinesterase inhibitor used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease and dementia. It works by preventing the breakdown of a chemical called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is important for memory, thinking, and judgment. Reminyl is available in 4 mg, 8 mg, and 16 mg tablets. The recommended dose is 8 mg two times a day. Reminyl can be taken with or without food.
What are the side effects of Reminyl?
The most common side effects of Reminyl are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, tiredness, and weakness.
What are the precautions of Reminyl?
Before taking Reminyl, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other cholinesterase inhibitors such as donepezil, rivastigmine, or tacrine; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: asthma, COPD, kidney disease, liver disease, seizures, stomach/intestine problems (e.g., blockage, ulcers, perforation), urinary problems (e.g., difficulty urinating, enlarged prostate).
This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcoholic beverages.
To minimize dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a seated or lying position.
Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, confusion, fainting, and urinary retention. These side effects can increase the risk of falling.
During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
