What is Clomid?

Clomid (clomiphene) is a non-steroidal fertility medicine. It causes the pituitary gland to release hormones needed to stimulate ovulation (the release of the egg from the ovary).

Clomid is used to cause ovulation in women with certain medical conditions (such as polycystic ovary syndrome) that prevent naturally occurring ovulation.

Clomid may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Important Information

You should not use Clomid if you have: undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding, a history of blood clots, a history of cancer of the breast, ovary, endometrium, or lining of the uterus, endocrine problems (eg, adrenal gland or pituitary gland problems), ovarian cysts (small growths on the ovaries), a history of stroke or heart attack, a history of liver disease or jaundice caused by pregnancy, a history of mental depression, a tumor of your pituitary gland, an uncontrolled adrenal gland or thyroid disorder, a history of blood clots in the lung or leg, or if you are pregnant. To make sure Clomid is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: a pelvic exam; a biopsy of your endometrium (uterine lining); if you have ever been pregnant; if you have ever been on bed rest for a medical reason; if you have ever had a blood transfusion; if you have ever been treated for cancer; if you have ever had surgery on your ovaries, Fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, or vagina; if you have ever had a blood clot; or if you have ever had any type of bleeding disorder. Clomid is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

How should I take Clomid?

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Your doctor will perform medical tests to make sure you do not have conditions that would prevent you from safely using Clomid. Clomid is usually taken for 5 days, starting on the 5th day of your menstrual period. Follow your doctor's instructions. You will need to have a pelvic examination before each treatment cycle. You must remain under the care of a doctor while you are using Clomid. You will most likely ovulate within 5 to 10 days after you take Clomid. To improve your chance of becoming pregnant, you should have sexual intercourse while you are ovulating. Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of Clomid, and will increase your dose if you do not ovulate. You should know that this medication may make you drowsy or cause blurred vision. Do not drive or perform other possible unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.
