Bactroban is an ointment that is used to treat skin infections. It is a topical antibiotic that is applied to the skin. Bactroban is available in two forms: a cream and an ointment. The cream is for use on the face, while the ointment can be used anywhere on the body. Bactroban is used to treat skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis, and cellulitis. It is also used to treat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) skin infections. Bactroban is in a class of medications called topical antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Bactroban cream and ointment are for use only on the skin. Do not use Bactroban cream or ointment in your eyes, nose, or mouth. To use Bactroban cream, apply a small amount of cream to the affected area of the skin and rub it in gently. To use Bactroban ointment, apply a small amount of ointment to the affected area of the skin and rub it in gently. Bactroban cream and ointment are usually applied 3 times a day for 10 days. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use Bactroban exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of it or use it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Do not use Bactroban for longer than 10 days. If your skin infection does not improve or gets worse within 10 days, call your doctor. Bactroban may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: mild burning, stinging, or itching of the skin rash dry skin If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: severe burning, stinging, or itching of the skin swelling, redness, or oozing of the treated skin hives difficulty breathing wheezing throat tightness Bactroban cream and ointment are for use only on the skin. Do not swallow Bactroban cream or ointment. If you accidentally swallow Bactroban, call your doctor immediately. Bactroban may be harmful if used during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known whether Bactroban passes into breast milk. Do not use Bactroban without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not use Bactroban on a child younger than 2 years old. Do not use Bactroban on sunburned, windburned, dry, chapped, irritated, or broken skin. Do not use Bactroban to treat any skin condition that has not been checked by a doctor. Do not use Bactroban cream or ointment on open wounds or on skin that is red, swollen, or has blisters. To make sure Bactroban is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: any type of skin infection kidney disease If you are using Bactroban cream, do not apply makeup or other skin products on the treated skin area. Avoid using other medications on the areas you treat with Bactroban cream or ointment unless your doctor tells you to. Do not use Bactroban cream or ointment for longer than 10 days. Call your doctor if your skin infection does not improve or gets worse within 10 days. Store Bactroban cream and ointment at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
