Zofran
Zofran (generic name: ondansetron) is a medication used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. It is also used to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery. Zofran is available as a tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, solution, and injectable. The injectable form is only given by a healthcare provider. Zofran can be taken with or without food.
Some common side effects of Zofran include:
- constipation
- diarrhea
- drowsiness
- headache
- tiredness
Zofran may also cause rare but serious side effects, including:
- anxiety
- blurred vision
- confusion
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- fever
- hives
- joint pain
- rash
- shortness of breath
- sweating
- wheezing
If you experience any of these side effects, call your doctor immediately. Zofran can also cause serious or life-threatening side effects, including:
- anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction)
- serotonin syndrome (a potentially life-threatening condition caused by too much serotonin in the body)
- neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a potentially life-threatening condition)
If you experience any of these side effects, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
Zofran is a pregnancy category B medication, which means it is generally safe for use during pregnancy, but should be used only when the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. Zofran should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy unless the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks.
