Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as: mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, or if you feel agitated, hostile, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
  • increased seizures;
  • fever, swollen glands, body aches, flu symptoms, sores in your mouth and throat;
  • easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;

A small number of people who take anticonvulsants for any condition (such as seizures, bipolar disorder, pain) may experience depression, suicidal thoughts/attempts, or other mental/mood problems. Tell your doctor right away if you or your family/caregiver notice any unusual/sudden changes in your mood, thoughts, or behavior including signs of depression, suicidal thoughts/attempts, thoughts about harming yourself.

How should I take Tegretol?

Take Tegretol exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Tegretol is usually taken two or four times daily. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release Tegretol tablet. Swallow it whole. Breaking the pill may cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.

To be sure Tegretol is helping your condition and not causing harmful effects, your blood may need to be tested often. Your liver and kidney function may also need to be checked. Visit your doctor regularly.

Wear a medical alert tag or carry an ID card stating that you take Tegretol. Any medical care provider who treats you should know that you take seizure medication.

If you have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are taking Tegretol. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.

Do not stop using Tegretol suddenly, even if you feel fine. Stopping suddenly may cause increased seizures. Follow your doctor's instructions about tapering your dose.

Seizure control is very important during pregnancy, and having a seizure could harm both mother and baby. Do not start or stop taking Tegretol during pregnancy without your doctor's advice.

Carbamazepine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using Tegretol.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

An overdose of carbamazepine can be fatal. Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, confusion, muscle stiffness, fainting, or seizure (convulsions).

What should I avoid while taking Tegretol?

Do not drink alcohol. Dangerous side effects or death could occur.

Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Carbamazepine can decrease sweating and you may be more prone to heat stroke.
