Lansoprazole, better known by the brand name Prevacid, is a medication used to treat a number of gastrointestinal disorders. These include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, duodenal ulcer, and gastric ulcer. Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Prevacid is available as a delayed-release capsule or an orally disintegrating tablet. It is taken once or twice daily, 30 minutes before a meal. The capsules should be swallowed whole, and the tablets should be allowed to dissolve on the tongue. Common side effects of Prevacid include headache, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. More serious side effects include kidney problems, osteoporosis, and magnesium deficiency. Lansoprazole should be used with caution in people with liver disease. Prevacid is a safe and effective medication for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. However, as with all medications, there are potential side effects.
