Bactrim is a sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim antibiotic combination. It is used to treat or prevent infections caused by bacteria. It is also used to treat or prevent malaria. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim can cause side effects that may be serious or even life-threatening. Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the following symptoms: - anemia (low red blood cell count) - confusion - hallucinations - pale skin - fever - easy bruising or bleeding - urinating less than usual or not at all - joint pain - severe skin rash Do not take sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim if you are allergic to sulfa drugs. Before taking sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have: - kidney disease - liver disease - AIDS - anemia - diabetes You may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not take this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim should not be given to a child younger than 2 months old. Take sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Take the medicine with a full glass of water. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim can be taken with or without food. Store sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, wear sunscreen and protective clothing, and tell your doctor if you have sunburned or have skin cancer. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim may also cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Be careful if you drive or operate machinery while taking this medication. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without first talking to your doctor. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim can cause side effects that may be serious or even life-threatening. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, wear sunscreen and protective clothing, and tell your doctor if you have sunburned or have skin cancer.
