Olanzapine

Olanzapine is a medication that is used to treat certain mental/mood disorders (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, irritability associated with autistic disorder). It can help to improve your mood, thoughts, and behavior. It may also help prevent worsening of your condition. This medication can decrease hallucinations and help you to think more clearly and positively. It may help you to keep from hurting yourself or others. Olanzapine belongs to a class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics.

Side Effects

Some of the most common side effects of olanzapine include weight gain, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, constipation, dry mouth, and headache. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Precautions

Before taking olanzapine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: personal or family history of bipolar disorder, depression, suicide attempts, liver disease, diabetes, low white blood cell count, seizures, difficulty swallowing, personal or family history of a substance use disorder (such as overuse of or addiction to drugs/alcohol).

This medication may make you sweat less, making you more likely to get heat stroke. Avoid doing things that may cause you to overheat, such as hard work or exercise in hot weather, or using hot tubs. When the weather is hot, drink a lot of fluids and dress lightly. If you overheat, quickly look for a place to cool down and rest. Get medical help right away if you have a fever that does not go away, mental/mood changes, headache, or dizziness.

This medication may increase the risk of death in older adults with dementia-related conditions.

This drug is not approved for use in children.

Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, and weight gain. These side effects can increase the risk of falling.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug Interactions

Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. This document does not contain all possible drug interactions. Keep a list of all the products you use (including prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicines without your doctor's approval.

Some products that may interact with this drug include: "blood thinners" (such as warfarin), clozapine, levodopa, metoclopramide, omeprazole, prochlorperazine, ranitidine, tricyclic antidepressants (such as amitriptyline).

This medication may interfere with certain laboratory tests (including urine drug screens), possibly causing false test results. Make sure laboratory personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug.

Overdose

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center.

Symptoms of overdose may include: drowsiness, fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, fainting, seizures.

Laboratory and/or medical tests (such as complete blood count, blood sugar, lipid profile, liver function tests) may be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details.

If you have diabetes, this medication may increase your blood sugar levels. Check your blood sugar levels regularly as directed by your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if you have symptoms of high blood sugar such as increased thirst/urination.

This medication may make you more susceptible to heat stroke. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise, in hot weather, or by not drinking enough fluids. Drink plenty of fluids while using this medication unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

This medication may increase your risk of developing cataracts. Have regular eye examinations.

This medication may affect your blood sugar. If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar levels on a regular basis while you are taking olanzapine.
