Zestoretic
Zestoretic (lisinopril-hydrochlorothiazide) is a combination of an ACE inhibitor and a thiazide diuretic used to treat hypertension and congestive heart failure. It works by relaxing blood vessels and increasing urine output to reduce fluid retention.
Zestoretic is available in generic form. Common side effects of Zestoretic include:
- dizziness
- tiredness
- headache
- nausea
- diarrhea
- upset stomach
- cough
Tell your doctor if you experience serious side effects of Zestoretic including:
- fainting
- easy bruising or bleeding
- muscle weakness
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- dark urine
- decreased urination
- signs of kidney problems (change in the amount of urine produced, blood in the urine, swelling, rapid weight gain)
- signs of low blood sodium levels (headache, confusion, slurred speech, severe weakness, vomiting, loss of coordination)
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment with Zestoretic. Lisinopril can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if you take the medicine during your second or third trimester.
Lisinopril can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
To make sure you can safely take Zestoretic, tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- diabetes
- gout
- a connective tissue disease such as Marfan syndrome or Sjogren's syndrome
- if you are on a low-salt diet
FDA pregnancy category D. Zestoretic can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if you take the medicine during your second or third trimester.

Do not give this medication to a child without medical advice.
Older adults may be more likely to have side effects from this medicine.
This medication can cause low blood pressure (hypotension). This may be more likely to occur when you first start taking lisinopril-hydrochlorothiazide, or if your dose is increased. To prevent low blood pressure, avoid sudden changes in position, and take lisinopril-hydrochlorothiazide at the same time each day.
Tell your doctor if you have a prolonged illness that causes diarrhea or vomiting.
Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather.
Drink plenty of fluids as directed by your doctor to prevent dehydration and tell your doctor right away if you have a change in the amount of urine produced.
Lisinopril-hydrochlorothiazide can affect your blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar levels on a regular basis while you are taking lisinopril-hydrochlorothiazide.
Zestoretic may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.
Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather.

Avoid salt substitutes or products that contain potassium without your doctor's advice.

Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially:
- a potassium supplement such as K-Dur, Klor-Con, or Slow-K
- insulin or oral diabetes medicine
- lithium
- gold injections to treat arthritis
- digoxin (Digitalis, Lanoxin)
- steroids (prednisone and others)
- vitamin or mineral supplements that contain potassium
- another blood pressure medication such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), fosinopril (Monopril), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), or trandolapril (Mavik)
- aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), indomethacin (Indocin), ketoprofen (Orudis), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), and others
This list is not complete and other drugs may interact with lisinopril-hydrochlorothiazide. Tell your doctor about all medications you use. This includes prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal products. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor.
