Tofranil

Tofranil (generic name imipramine) is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) used to treat major depressive disorder and enuresis (bedwetting). It was first approved for use in the United States in 1959.

Uses

Tofranil is approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder and enuresis in children and adults.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Tofranil include dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, and dizziness. Other side effects include:

• blurred vision
• changes in weight or appetite
• diarrhea
• headache
• increased sweating
• nausea
• sexual side effects (decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory delay)
• tremors
• urinating more or less than usual

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Tofranil for adults is 75 mg per day, divided into 3 or 4 doses. The dose may be increased by 50 mg per day every 2 to 3 days, up to a maximum of 225 mg per day. The usual starting dose for children 6 to 12 years of age is 5 mg 2 or 3 times per day. The dose may be increased by 5 mg per day every 2 to 3 days, up to a maximum of 45 mg per day.

Interactions

Tofranil may interact with other medications. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, Tofranil should be used only when prescribed. This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
