Vantin
Vantin is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections. It belongs to a class of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic is only available with a doctor's prescription. Vantin is available in tablet and suspension form.
Important Information
You should not use Vantin if you are allergic to cefpodoxime or to similar antibiotics, such as cefaclor (Ceclor), cefadroxil (Duricef), cefazolin (Ancef), cefdinir (Omnicef), cefditoren (Spectracef), cefepime (Maxipime), cefixime (Suprax), cefotaxime (Claforan), cefotetan (Cefotan), cefoxitin (Mefoxin), cefpodoxime (Vantin), cefprozil (Cefzil), ceftaroline (Teflaro), ceftazidime (Fortaz), ceftibuten (Cedax), ceftriaxone (Rocephin), cefuroxime (Ceftin), cephalexin (Keflex), cephradine (Velosef), and others.
To make sure Vantin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- kidney disease;
- a stomach or intestinal disorder such as colitis;
- diarrhea caused by taking antibiotics; or
- if you are allergic to penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics (cephalexin, cefaclor, cefuroxime, cefprozil, cefuroxime axetil, cefdinir, cefditoren, cefixime, cefotaxime, cefotetan, cefoxitin, cefpodoxime, cefprozil, cefdinir, cefditoren, cefixime, cefotaxime, cefotetan, cefoxitin, cefpodoxime).
FDA pregnancy category B. Vantin is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
Cefpodoxime can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
How should I take Vantin?
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure the liquid with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
The Vantin tablet may be swallowed whole, or it may be crushed and mixed with water. If you cannot swallow a tablet whole, tell your doctor. The tablet will dissolve and can be given through a nasogastric (NG) tube or gastric tube (GT).
To take cefpodoxime suspension by mouth, use only a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
Prepare your dose only when you are ready to take the medicine. Do not store cefpodoxime oral suspension for later use. Throw away any mixed cefpodoxime oral suspension that is not used within 14 days.
Vantin is usually given for 7 to 14 days. Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics.
Cefpodoxime will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold.
Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse while using cefpodoxime.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An overdose of cefpodoxime can be fatal.
What should I avoid while taking Vantin?
Avoid taking antacids or acid reducers at the same time you take cefpodoxime. These products can make it harder for your body to absorb cefpodoxime.
Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, stop taking cefpodoxime and call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
Vantin side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
- fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, sores in your mouth and throat;
- white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips;
- jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes);
- little or no urinating;
- swelling, rapid weight gain;
- pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, confusion or weakness;
- seizure (convulsions); or
- easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or
