Tinidazole is an antibiotic that is used to treat certain types of infections. It is most commonly used to treat bacterial infections of the stomach or intestines. Tinidazole may also be used to treat other types of infections, such as vaginal infections. Tinidazole is available in generic form. Tinidazole belongs to a class of drugs known as nitroimidazoles. Tinidazole works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. Tinidazole does not kill viruses. Tinidazole is used to treat the following conditions: stomach or intestinal infections caused by certain types of bacteria vaginal infections Tinidazole may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Tinidazole should not be given to a child younger than 3 years old. You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to Tinidazole or other nitroimidazole antibiotics. To make sure Tinidazole is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: liver disease a blood disorder If you are using Tinidazole to treat a vaginal infection, your sexual partner may also need to take Tinidazole, even if he or she does not have symptoms of an infection. Do not use Tinidazole if you are pregnant. It could harm the unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment. You should not breast-feed while you are using this medicine. Tinidazole can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using Tinidazole. Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice. How should I take Tinidazole? Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed. Take Tinidazole with food if stomach upset occurs. Shake the oral suspension (liquid) before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. To treat a vaginal infection, insert the applicator into the vagina as far as it will comfortably go, and squeeze the plunger to release the medicine. Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms quickly improve. Skipping doses can increase your risk of infection that is resistant to medication. Tinidazole will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Do not freeze. Throw away any unused suspension after 14 days. What happens if I miss a dose? Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time. What happens if I overdose? Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Overdose symptoms may include vomiting, feeling restless or nervous, vision problems, confusion, or fainting. What should I avoid while taking Tinidazole? Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Tinidazole. You may have unpleasant side effects such as fast heartbeats, warmth or redness under your skin, tingly feeling, nausea, and vomiting. Tinidazole side effects Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have: severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody; fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms; a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out; easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness; numbness or tingly feeling; or jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes). Common Tinidazole side effects may include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain; rash; or vaginal itching or discharge. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088. What other drugs will affect Tinidazole? Other drugs may affect Tinidazole, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any medicine you start or stop using.
