Midamor

Midamor (amiloride) is a potassium-sparing diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt and keeps your potassium levels from getting too low. Midamor is used to treat fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or kidney problems. Midamor is also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Midamor may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Important Information

You should not use Midamor if you are allergic to amiloride, or if you have kidney disease, high levels of potassium in your blood, or a history of Addison's disease or adrenal gland tumor.

To make sure Midamor is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • kidney disease;
  • a history of kidney stones;
  • diabetes;

How should I take Midamor?

Take Midamor exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results.

Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Midamor is usually taken once daily, with or without food.

Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. You may need frequent blood tests to check your potassium level.

While using Midamor, you may need to take a potassium supplement or eat foods that are high in potassium (oranges, bananas, tomatoes, potatoes with the skin on).

Do not use salt substitutes or low-sodium milk products that contain potassium. These products could cause your potassium levels to get too high while you are taking Midamor.

To be sure this medication is not causing harmful effects, your blood may need to be tested often. Your kidney or liver function may also need to be checked. Visit your doctor regularly.

If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Midamor.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
