Cyklokapron

Cyklokapron (tranexamic acid) is a medication that is used to treat or prevent heavy bleeding. It works by helping the blood clot better. This medicine is available only with a doctor's prescription.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Cyklokapron include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain or upset, heartburn, gas, bloating, constipation, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, tired feeling, muscle or joint pain, sore throat, cough, runny or stuffy nose, cold symptoms, hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, breast pain, vaginal discharge or itching, mild skin rash or itching, ringing in your ears, or changes in color vision (such as seeing a blue tinge to objects or having difficulty telling the difference between blue and green).

Precautions

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to tranexamic acid, or if you have ever had a blood clot (such as in the lung or leg, a heart attack, a stroke, or mini-stroke).

Before using Cyklokapron, tell your doctor if you have: a history of blood clots; a bleeding or blood clotting disorder; high blood pressure; a history of heart disease, stroke, or blood vessel disease; a history of cancer; if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; if you take birth control pills; or if you are having surgery.

You may need to stop using this medicine for a short time before a surgery, medical procedure, or dental work.

Do not take more of this medication than is recommended. An overdose of Cyklokapron can be fatal.

Interactions

Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin, heparin), aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam, and others.

This medication may increase your risk of developing a blood clot. Check with your doctor if you have any questions about this.

Overdose

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center. Do not share this medication with others.

This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another condition unless told to do so by your doctor. A different medication may be necessary in those cases.

Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., blood clotting time, complete blood count) should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details.

This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a tightly closed container. Brief storage between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Cyklokapron out of the reach of children and away from pets.
