What is Cardizem?

Cardizem is a medication used to treat high blood pressure, chest pain, and certain types of irregular heartbeat. The drug is in a class of medications called calcium channel blockers. It works by relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate to improve blood flow and reduce blood pressure. Cardizem is available in tablet and injectable forms. It is usually taken once or twice daily. The injectable form is given as an infusion into a vein over a period of minutes to hours. Common side effects of Cardizem include headache, drowsiness, lightheadedness, and nausea. Cardizem can also cause low blood pressure, which may cause you to feel dizzy or faint.

How to Use Cardizem

Cardizem is usually taken once or twice daily. The injectable form is given as an infusion into a vein over a period of minutes to hours. If you are taking the tablet form of Cardizem, take it with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily. If you are taking the extended-release tablet, you may take it with or without food. However, if you take the extended-release tablet with food, you may have an increased chance of dizziness or lightheadedness. Take the extended-release tablet at the same time each day. If you are taking the suspension, shake the bottle well before each dose. Measure the suspension with a special measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. Cardizem may be taken with or without food. Follow your doctor's instructions. Your doctor will start you on a low dose of Cardizem and gradually increase your dose. Cardizem is usually given for only a short time, such as 3 to 4 weeks. Do not stop taking Cardizem suddenly, or you could have a serious heart problem. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Cardizem. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time. Do not skip doses or stop taking Cardizem without first talking to your doctor. Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the suspension in the refrigerator.
