What Is Antivert? Antivert is the brand name for the medication meclizine. It's used to treat or prevent nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness. Antivert is also used to treat symptoms of vertigo (dizziness or spinning sensation). Meclizine is an antihistamine that works by blocking a chemical in the brain that controls nausea and vomiting. Antivert is available in generic form and as the brand-name drug. Generic drugs usually cost less. In some cases, they may not be available in every strength or form as the brand-name version. What Are Side Effects of Antivert? Common side effects of Antivert include: drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, and weight gain. Antivert can cause drowsiness. Do not take this medication before you are able to stay awake for the entire trip. If you have any of these serious side effects, stop taking Antivert and call your doctor right away: fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, seizures, or urinating less than usual or not at all. Antivert can interact with other medications. Tell your doctor all prescription and over-the-counter medications and supplements you take. Antivert should not be used during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Meclizine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are taking Antivert. Do not give this medication to a child younger than 12 years old. How Should I Take Antivert? Antivert is usually taken one to two hours before you travel or before activities that cause dizziness or spinning. Antivert is available in tablets, chewable tablets, and capsules. The tablets and capsules should be swallowed whole. The chewable tablets can be chewed or swallowed whole. Antivert can be taken with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow it whole. To take Antivert chewable tablets: Place the tablet on your tongue. Allow the tablet to dissolve in your mouth without chewing. Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. If you still have nausea after taking the maximum number of tablets, call your doctor. To take Antivert capsules: Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water. Do not open, crush, or chew the capsule. To take Antivert oral suspension: Shake the bottle well before each dose. Measure the oral suspension with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. The Antivert chewable tablet must be chewed before you swallow it. Do not take more than the recommended dose of Antivert, or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse. What Happens If I Miss a Dose of Antivert? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. What Happens If I Overdose on Antivert? Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An overdose of Antivert is not expected to be dangerous. Symptoms of an Antivert overdose may include: drowsiness, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, seizures, or urinating less than usual or not at all. What Should I Avoid While Taking Antivert? Do not drink alcohol. It can increase drowsiness caused by Antivert. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medicine will affect you. Your reactions could be impaired. Do not take other medicines that make you sleepy (such as cold medicine, pain medication, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression, or anxiety). Antivert will add to the effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants (medicines that make you drowsy or less alert). Ask your doctor before taking a sleeping pill, narcotic pain medicine, prescription cough medicine, a muscle relaxer, or medicine for anxiety, depression, or seizures. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall.
