Amaryl

Amaryl (glimepiride) is an oral diabetes medicine that helps control blood sugar levels. Amaryl is used together with diet and exercise to treat type 2 diabetes. Amaryl may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Important Information

You should not use Amaryl if you are allergic to glimepiride, or if you have:

  • type 1 diabetes; or
  • diabetic ketoacidosis (call your doctor for treatment).

To make sure Amaryl is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • kidney disease;
  • liver disease;
  • congestive heart failure;
  • pancreatitis;
  • underactive thyroid;
  • if you are 65 or older; or
  • if you are malnourished.

Amaryl is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

You should not breastfeed while using this medicine.

How should I take Amaryl?

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.

Take this medicine with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow it whole.

If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Amaryl.

You may have low blood sugar while taking this medicine. Symptoms include headache, hunger, sweating, confusion, irritability, dizziness, or feeling shaky. Be sure to eat or drink enough calories and carbohydrates to prevent low blood sugar. Low blood sugar is more likely if you drink large amounts of alcohol, do unusually heavy exercise, or do not consume enough calories from food.

To help prevent low blood sugar, eat meals on a regular schedule, and do not skip meals. Check your blood sugar levels before and after exercise. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using, especially:

  • insulin or oral diabetes medicine; or
  • a heart rhythm medicine.

Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of insulin shock: sweating, rapid breathing, heart racing, dizziness, blurred vision, hunger, shakiness, confusion, or feeling jittery.

Your blood sugar will need to be checked often, and you may need other blood tests at your doctor's office.

Keep using Amaryl as directed, even if you feel well. High blood sugar can be very dangerous. You may need to use a blood sugar monitoring device to check your blood sugar at home.

If you have trouble swallowing a tablet whole, you may crush the tablet and mix it with a small amount of water to make a mixture. Drink the mixture within 30 minutes. Do not prepare the mixture ahead of time for later use.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not allow the liquid medicine to freeze.

Throw away any unused mixture after 30 days.

Amaryl doses are based on weight (especially in children and teenagers), and any changes may affect the dose. Tell the doctor if the child gaining or losing weight.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

What should I avoid while taking Amaryl?

Follow your doctor's instructions about using this medicine if you are pregnant. Blood sugar control is very important during pregnancy, and your dose needs may be different during each trimester of pregnancy. Tell your doctor if your blood sugar levels are too high or too low.

Do not take other medicines that contain glimepiride or sulfonylureas, such as glipizide, glyburide, or tolbutamide.
