Albenza (albendazole) is a medication used to treat a variety of parasitic infections. These include roundworm, whipworm, hookworm, pinworm, and others. Albenza works by kill the parasites in your body. Albenza is available as a generic drug. Generic drugs are often much less expensive than the brand-name version. In some cases, they may be less expensive even if you don't have insurance. Albenza may be used as part of a combination therapy. That means you may need to take it with other drugs. Albenza can cause rare but serious side effects, such as liver damage or allergic reactions. Call your doctor right away if you have symptoms of either of these conditions. Before taking Albenza, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, a history of mental illness, or any other medical conditions. Albenza is FDA-approved for use in adults and children. Take Albenza exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Albenza is usually taken with food. To treat a parasitic infection: Adults and children weighing more than 60 kg (132 pounds): 400 mg once a day, taken with food Children weighing less than 60 kg: The recommended dose is 15 mg/kg/day, taken in 2 divided doses with food. The maximum dose is 400 mg/day. To prevent a parasitic infection from returning: Adults and children weighing more than 60 kg (132 pounds): 400 mg once a day, taken with food Children weighing less than 60 kg: The recommended dose is 5 to 10 mg/kg/day, taken in 2 divided doses with food. Albenza may be taken for up to 8 weeks. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow it whole. Do not share this medicine with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Albenza. Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
