Has a generic version of Precose been approved?

A generic version of Precose has been approved by the FDA. However, this does not mean that the product will necessarily be commercially available - possibly because of drug patents and/or drug exclusivity. The following products are equivalent to Precose and have been approved by the FDA:
  • Acarbose Tablet; Oral; Acarbose 25 mg

What is acarbose, and how does it work (mechanism of action)?

Acarbose is an oral alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. It works by slowing the breakdown of starches, such as bread, potatoes, and pasta, in the small intestine. This action results in a smaller rise in blood sugar levels following meals. The FDA approved acarbose in April, 1995.

What are the uses for acarbose?

Acarbose is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (formerly called non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset diabetes).

What are the side effects of acarbose?

The most common side effects of acarbose are
  • abdominal pain,
  • diarrhea,
  • flatulence (gas),
  • and bloating.
Acarbose may cause a temporary drop in blood sugar levels soon after the first dose. To prevent this reaction, the first dose should be taken with breakfast or the first main meal of the day. The first dose should be no more than 50 mg. Subsequent doses may be increased by 50 mg at weekly intervals until the desired blood sugar control is achieved. The maximum recommended dose is 300 mg three times daily.

What is the dosage for acarbose?

The starting dose is 25 mg three times daily with the first main meal. The dosage may be gradually increased by 50 mg at weekly intervals until the desired blood sugar control is achieved. The maximum recommended dose is 300 mg three times daily.

Which drugs or supplements interact with acarbose?

Acarbose slows the digestion of all carbohydrates, including those in other oral medications such as sulfonylureas (e.g., glipizide [Glucotrol, Glucotrol XL], glyburide [DiaBeta, Micronase, Glynase], glimepiride [Amaryl]), and insulin. Therefore, when taking acarbose, these other medications should be taken at least one-half hour before or two hours after a meal to prevent the breakdown of their medication.
