Exelon
Exelon (rivastigmine) is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It works by increasing the amount of a certain substance (acetylcholine) in the brain. This may help to improve symptoms of dementia in people with Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease.
Exelon is available in generic form. Common side effects of Exelon include:
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- loss of appetite
- weight loss
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- tiredness
- headache
- weakness
- trembling (tremor)
- sweating
- increased urination
- confusion
- memory problems
- hallucinations
- depression
- anxiety
- agitation
- skin rash
- itching
Tell your doctor if you experience serious side effects of Exelon including:
- seizures (convulsions)
- fainting
- fast/irregular heartbeat
- muscle cramps/weakness
- change in the amount of urine
- yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, severe stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting.
The recommended starting dose of Exelon is 4.6 mg/24 hours (2 capsules of 3 mg strength once daily). Dosage may be gradually increased by the doctor as tolerated by the patient. Exelon should be taken with food and water. Do not crush or chew capsules. Do not suddenly stop taking Exelon without first talking to your doctor.
Patients may experience an increase in seizures when taking Exelon. Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication will affect you. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Exelon should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
