Copegus (ribavirin) is a nucleoside analog antiviral medication used to treat hepatitis C. It is also sometimes used in combination with other antiviral medications to treat other types of viral infections. Copegus is available in generic form. Common side effects of Copegus include: headache, tiredness, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, anxiety, depression, trouble sleeping (insomnia), and joint or muscle pain. Other side effects of Copegus include: rash, itching, loss of appetite, weight loss, skin discoloration (yellowing), dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), flu-like symptoms, cough, sore throat, runny nose, increased sweating, tremors, ringing in the ears, changes in taste, numbness or tingling of the hands or feet, eye pain or redness, blurred vision, vision problems, increased urination, urinary tract infection, vaginal itching or discharge, or increased thirst. Ribavirin can cause birth defects and death of the unborn child. You should not take Copegus if you are pregnant or may become pregnant during treatment. You must use 2 forms of birth control during treatment with Copegus, and for 6 months after treatment ends. Copegus can also cause serious or fatal side effects in people with certain medical conditions. Tell your doctor if you have ever had: a blood disorder, kidney disease, liver disease, breathing problems, Thalassemia (a blood disorder), anemia (lack of red blood cells), heart disease, or a heart rhythm disorder. You may develop new or worsening kidney problems during treatment with Copegus. Your doctor may do blood tests to check your kidney function during treatment. Copegus can lower blood cells that help your body fight infections and help your blood to clot. You may get infections more easily, or bleeding may be more severe or happen more often. Call your doctor if you have unusual bruising or bleeding, or signs of infection (fever, chills, body aches). Do not take Copegus if you are pregnant, or if you are a man and your sexual partner is pregnant. Copegus can cause birth defects or death of an unborn baby. You must use 2 forms of birth control while you are taking Copegus, and for 6 months after your treatment ends. Do not breastfeed while you are taking Copegus. Copegus is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
