Urispas (flavoxate) is a smooth muscle relaxant. It works by relaxing the muscles in the bladder and urinary tract. Urispas is used to treat urinary frequency, urgency, and incontinence (urine leakage) in adults. Urispas is also used to relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Urispas may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Important Information You should not use Urispas if you are allergic to flavoxate. To make sure Urispas is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: kidney disease; liver disease; myasthenia gravis; glaucoma; an enlarged prostate; a urination problem; seizures; or a bleeding or blood clotting disorder. FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Urispas will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medicine. It is not known whether flavoxate passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice. How should I take Urispas? Take Urispas exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Urispas is usually taken 3 or 4 times a day. Follow your doctor's instructions. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow it whole. An empty tablet shell may appear in your stool. This effect is harmless because your body has already absorbed the medication. Urispas is only part of a complete program of treatment that may also include diet, lifestyle changes, or other medications. Follow your doctor's instructions very closely. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
