Levlen

Levlen is a birth control pill that contains the synthetic progestin levonorgestrel and the synthetic estrogen ethinyl estradiol. It is used to prevent pregnancy. It is also sometimes used to treat acne in women who are at least 14 years old and have started having periods.

Levlen is a "combination pill" that contains two hormones. It works by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). It also makes the mucus in the cervix (the opening of the uterus) thicker, which makes it more difficult for sperm to fertilize an egg.

Levlen is about 91% effective at preventing pregnancy. This means that out of 100 women who use Levlen, about 9 will become pregnant during the first year of use.

If you take Levlen as directed and miss a pill, take the missed pill as soon as you remember. If you forget to take a pill for two days in a row, take two pills the day you remember and two pills the following day. You will need to use a backup method of birth control (such as a condom) for at least the next seven days.

If you vomit within two hours of taking a pill, you should consider the pill to be ineffective and take another one. You will also need to use a backup method of birth control for at least the next seven days.

If you have unprotected sex (sex without birth control) at any time while you are taking Levlen, you may become pregnant. If this happens, stop taking Levlen and call your doctor right away.

Levlen may interact with other medications that you are taking. It is important to tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Levlen may cause side effects. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, headache, bloating, breast tenderness, and weight gain. These side effects usually go away after a few weeks. If they persist or become bothersome, talk to your doctor.

Rare but serious side effects include blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. If you experience any of these side effects, call your doctor immediately.

Levlen is a safe and effective medication when used as directed. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about taking Levlen.
