Keftab
Keftab is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, skin, urinary tract, and ear. It is also used to treat some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Keftab is available in generic form.
What is Keftab?
Keftab (cephalexin) is a cephalosporin antibiotic. Cephalosporin antibiotics are used to treat a wide variety of infections. They work by interfering with the bacterium's ability to make cell walls, which eventually leads to the bacterium's death.
What are the possible side effects of Keftab?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
- diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
- fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms; or
- jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Less serious side effects may include:
- mild diarrhea;
- nausea, vomiting, upset stomach;
- white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips;
- swollen, painful, or tender gums;
- painful or difficult urination;
- mild skin rash or itching;
- vaginal itching or discharge;
- joint pain; or
- headache.

What is the most important information I should know about Keftab?
You should not use Keftab if you are allergic to cephalexin or to similar antibiotics, such as Ceftin, Cefzil, Duricef, Fortaz, Omnicef, Spectracef, Suprax, and others.
Before taking Keftab, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have kidney disease, a stomach or intestinal disorder such as colitis, and diabetes.
If you are using Keftab to treat gonorrhea, your doctor may test you to make sure you do not also have syphilis, another STD.
Keftab can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Do not give this medication to a child without medical advice.
Keftab is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
Take Keftab exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
You may take Keftab with or without food. Shake the liquid form of Keftab well just before you measure a dose. To be sure you get the correct dose, measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
Do not take Keftab for longer than 10 days. Take this medicine at the same time each day.
Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Keftab will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
Do not share this medication with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have.

What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
What should I avoid while taking Keftab?
Avoid taking antacids, vitamin or mineral supplements, sucralfate (Carafate), or didanosine (Videx) powder or chewable tablets within 2 hours before or after you take Keftab. These other medicines can make it harder for your body to absorb Keftab.
Do not take Keftab if you are also taking probenecid (Benemid).
