What is Feldene?

Feldene is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and swelling (inflammation) from various conditions such as arthritis, menstrual cramps, and other types of pain. It is also used to reduce fever. Feldene is known as a COX-2 inhibitor, which means it helps to block a specific enzyme that causes pain and inflammation.

What are the possible side effects of Feldene?

The most common side effects of Feldene are:

  • stomach pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • gas
  • heartburn
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • headache
  • ringing in your ears
  • blurred vision
  • weight gain

Feldene may also cause less common side effects such as:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • nervousness
  • sleep problems (insomnia)
  • skin rash
  • itching
  • hives
  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • hoarseness
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • wheezing
  • cough
  • chest pain
  • fast or irregular heartbeat
  • decreased urination
  • increased thirst
  • muscle pain or weakness
  • joint pain
  • kidney problems
  • flu-like symptoms

If you experience any of the following side effects, stop taking Feldene and call your doctor immediately or get emergency medical treatment:

  • black, tarry stools
  • blood in the urine or stools
  • decreased urination
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • hoarseness
  • rash
  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • wheezing

Feldene may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.

What should I know before taking Feldene?

Before taking Feldene, tell your doctor if you have, or have ever had:

  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease
  • asthma
  • polyps in your nose
  • rhinitis
  • nasal septum perforation
  • a bleeding or blood clotting disorder
  • high blood pressure
  • heart disease or congestive heart failure
  • a history of heart attack or stroke
  • a history of stomach or intestinal bleeding
  • a history of ulcers
  • seizures
  • diabetes
  • edema (swelling)
  • fluid retention
  • a history of drug or alcohol abuse
  • an allergy to Feldene or any other medications

If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding, do not take Feldene without first talking to your doctor. Feldene may cause harm to the fetus.

You should not take Feldene if you are taking any of the following medications:

  • aspirin
  • blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin)
  • cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)
  • lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid)
  • methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall)
  • phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • steroids such as prednisone (Deltasone) or methylprednisolone (Medrol)
  • an ACE inhibitor such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), fosinopril (Monopril), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), or trandolapril (Mavik)
  • angiotensin II receptor antagonists such as candesartan (Atacand), eprosartan (Teveten), irbesartan (Avapro), losartan (Cozaar), olmesartan (Benicar), telmisartan (Micardis), or valsartan (Diovan)
  • a beta-blocker such as atenolol (Tenormin), carvedilol (Coreg), labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol), nadolol (Corgard), propranolol (Inderal, InnoPran), sotalol (Betapace), or timolol (Blocadren)
  • diuretics ('water pills') such as amiloride (Midamor), bumetanide (Bumex),
