What is Clozaril? Clozaril (clozapine) is a antipsychotic medicine. It works by changing the actions of chemicals in the brain. Clozaril is used to treat severe schizophrenia, or to reduce the risk of suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia or similar disorders. Clozaril may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Important Information You should not use Clozaril if you are allergic to clozapine. To make sure Clozaril is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: history of blood disorders or bone marrow problems; history of heart disease, congestive heart failure, heart rhythm problems; a history of seizures; history of low white blood cell counts; if you are taking an MAO inhibitor (furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others); or if you have recently had a heart attack. Some people using Clozaril have fallen asleep during normal daytime activities such as working, talking, eating, or driving. You may fall asleep without any warning, even after feeling awake and alert for several hours. Stop taking Clozaril and call your doctor at once if you have: uncontrolled muscle movements (tremor, twitching); seizure (convulsions); a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out; fever, chills, flu symptoms, sores in your mouth and throat; easy bruising or bleeding (nosebleeds, bleeding gums); increased thirst or urination, weight gain; or swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet. Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself. Do not drink alcohol while you are using Clozaril. Clozaril can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using Clozaril. Older adults may be more likely to have side effects from this medicine. How should I take Clozaril? Take Clozaril exactly as it was prescribed for you. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Clozaril is usually taken 2 or 3 times per day. Follow your doctor's instructions. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow it whole. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. The generic form of Clozaril is also available as a tablet and a suspension (liquid), and is usually taken 2 to 4 times a day. To take the Clozaril orally disintegrating tablet (FazaClo ODT): Keep the tablet in its blister pack until you are ready to take it. Use dry hands to remove the tablet and place it in your mouth. Do not swallow the tablet whole. Allow it to dissolve in your mouth without chewing. Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. If desired, you may drink liquid to help swallow the dissolved tablet. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse while using Clozaril. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. You should not stop using Clozaril suddenly. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse. Keep the medicine container tightly closed when not in use. Throw away any unused liquid after 4 weeks. What happens if I miss a dose? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. What happens if I overdose? Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, fast or slow heart rate, shallow breathing, feeling light-headed, fainting, or seizure (convulsions). What should I avoid while taking Clozaril? Do not drink alcohol. Dangerous side effects or death could occur. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Clozaril can decrease sweating and you may be more prone to heat stroke. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Dizziness or severe drowsiness can cause falls, fractures, or other injuries. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medicine will affect you. Your reactions could be impaired. Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Clozaril can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may result. Use a sunscreen (minimum SPF 15) and wear protective clothing if you must be out in the sun.
