What is Voltaren?
Voltaren is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to relieve pain, swelling, and inflammation. It is available as a generic drug and as the brand-name drug Voltaren. The brand-name version is also available as a topical gel.
What is the most important information I should know about Voltaren?
Voltaren may increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Do not take Voltaren if you have a history of heart disease, stroke, or blood clotting disorder. Do not take Voltaren if you are pregnant. Voltaren can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.
How should I take Voltaren?
Take Voltaren exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Voltaren is sometimes given only once per day. Follow your doctor's instructions.
Measure liquid medicine with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
The Voltaren gel dosage form is used to relieve pain in adults. Apply the gel to clean, dry skin. Do not apply to skin that is broken, irritated, or sunburned. Do not apply to a skin area that is being treated with a topical cream or ointment.
Gently rub a pea-sized amount of the gel into the affected area. Do not apply the gel to open wounds. Voltaren gel is usually applied 3-4 times daily. Follow your doctor's instructions.
The Voltaren oral dosage form is used to relieve pain and swelling (inflammation) in adults. Voltaren is usually given as an initial dose of 50 mg to 100 mg, followed by 50 mg to 100 mg daily. Follow your doctor's instructions.
To take the Voltaren tablet:
- Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.
- Do not split, chew, crush, or dissolve the tablet.
To take the Voltaren extended-release tablet:
- Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.
- Do not split, chew, crush, or dissolve the tablet.
- To take the Voltaren sprinkle capsule:
- Open the capsule and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of pudding or applesauce to make swallowing easier.
- Swallow right away without chewing. Do not save the mixture for later use.
- Follow the medicine with a glass of water.
To take the Voltaren orally disintegrating tablet:
- Place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve, without chewing.
- Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. If desired, you may drink liquid to help swallow the dissolved tablet.
To take the Voltaren delayed-release tablet:
- Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.
- Do not split, chew, crush, or dissolve the tablet.
To take the Voltaren orally disintegrating tablet:
- Place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve, without chewing.
- Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. If desired, you may drink liquid to help swallow the dissolved tablet.
To take the Voltaren delayed-release orally disintegrating tablet (Solu-Medrol):
- Remove the tablet from the package only when you are ready to take the medicine.
- Place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve, without chewing.
- Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. If desired, you may drink liquid to help swallow the dissolved tablet.
If you take the Voltaren delayed-release tablet (Cataflam), do not take it with food or milk. Doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects. To take the Voltaren delayed-release tablet (Cataflam), take it with a full glass of water as directed by your doctor, usually 3 or 4 times daily.
If you take the Voltaren extended-release tablet (Zorvolex), do not take it with food or milk. Doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects. To take the Voltaren extended-release tablet (Zorvolex), take it with a full glass of water as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Since Voltaren is taken as needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are taking the medication regularly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An overdose of Voltaren can be fatal.
What should I avoid?
Avoid drinking alcohol. It may increase your risk of stomach bleeding. Avoid taking aspirin or other NSAIDs while you are taking Voltaren. Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Voltaren can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may result.
Voltaren side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
