Sumycin

Sumycin (tetracycline) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of infections. Sumycin is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. It is also used to treat acne. Sumycin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Sumycin is available in generic form.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Sumycin include:

• nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• stomach pain or upset
• loss of appetite
• headache
• dizziness
• vaginal itching or discharge

Seek medical attention right away if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

• severe stomach pain or cramping
• watery or bloody diarrhea
• fever
• rash
• hives
• difficulty breathing or swallowing
• yellowing of the skin or eyes
• unusual bruising or bleeding
• white patches or sores in the mouth or on the lips

Drug Interactions

Sumycin may interact with other medications. Tell your doctor all prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.

Overdose

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center. Symptoms of overdose may include:

• severe stomach pain or cramping
• watery or bloody diarrhea
• fever
• rash
• hives
• difficulty breathing or swallowing
• yellowing of the skin or eyes
• unusual bruising or bleeding
• white patches or sores in the mouth or on the lips

Notes

• Do not share this medication with others.
• Labor and delivery: This medication should not be used during labor and delivery. If you think you have become pregnant while taking this medication, tell your doctor right away.
• This medication passes into breast milk. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of Sumycin, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Storage

Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Sumycin out of the reach of children and away from pets.

Sumycin is to be used only by the patient for whom it is prescribed. Do not share it with other people.

If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, check with your doctor.

Check with your doctor before you use a dietary supplement or plan to lose weight. You may need a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.

Use Sumycin with extreme caution in children younger 10 years; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Sumycin should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor immediately. Sumycin is excreted in breast milk and may cause side effects in nursing infants. Do not breastfeed while taking Sumycin.
