Risperdal

Risperdal (risperidone) is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain. Risperdal is used to treat schizophrenia in adults and children who are at least 13 years old. Risperdal is also used to treat episodes of mania or mixed episodes in adults and children who are at least 10 years old. Risperdal is also used to treat Tourette's disorder in children and adolescents who are at least 5 years old. Risperdal may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Important Information

You should not use Risperdal if you are allergic to risperidone. Some people taking Risperdal have developed a serious brain condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). Symptoms may include fever; stiff muscles; confusion; abnormal thinking; fast or irregular heartbeat; and sweating. Contact your doctor at once if you have any of these symptoms. Before you take Risperdal, tell your doctor if you have ever had heart disease, or high blood pressure. You may have increased sexual urges, unusual urges to gamble, or other intense urges while taking this medicine. Talk with your doctor if this occurs. Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits. Your heart function may need to be checked using an electrocardiograph or ECG (sometimes called an EKG). Children taking risperidone may need frequent weight and blood pressure checks. Risperdal may affect blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar levels on a regular basis while you are taking this medicine. Risperdal may increase the amount of a certain hormone (prolactin) in your blood. Symptoms include enlarged breasts, missed menstrual period, decreased sexual ability, and milk production. Contact your doctor if you have any of these symptoms. Older adults may be more likely to have side effects from this medicine. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if Risperdal will harm an unborn baby. However, taking risperidone in the last 3 months of pregnancy may cause problems in the newborn, such as withdrawal symptoms, slow heart rate, low body temperature, and trouble breathing. If you become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away. You should not breast-feed while you are using Risperdal.

How should I take Risperdal?

Take Risperdal exactly as it was prescribed for you. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Risperdal can be taken with or without food. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. It may take several weeks before your symptoms improve. Keep using the medication as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve. Do not stop using Risperdal suddenly, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to avoid withdrawal symptoms when you stop using risperidone. To make sure Risperdal is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: liver disease (especially cirrhosis); kidney disease; dementia; Parkinson's disease; trouble swallowing; a history of heart disease or sudden cardiac death; or if you take medicine to treat depression or mental illness. Some young people have thoughts about suicide when first taking an antipsychotic medication. Your doctor should check your progress at regular visits. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms. FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Risperdal will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication. It is not known whether risperidone passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using Risperdal. Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice.

Side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have: tremors or uncontrolled muscle movements; stiff muscles, high fever, sweating, confusion, fast or uneven heartbeats, rapid breathing, or fainting; increased hunger, thirst, urination, or weakness; swelling, weight gain, feeling short of breath; pancreatitis - severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, fast heart rate; or low white blood cell counts - fever, chills, night sweats, mouth sores, pale skin, unusual weakness. Common Risperdal side effects may include: dizziness, drowsiness, tired feeling; sleep problems (insomnia); headache, upset stomach; mild nausea, vomiting, constipation; or weight gain. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

What other drugs will affect Risperdal?

Taking Risperdal with other drugs that make you sleepy or slow your breathing can cause dangerous side effects or death. Ask your doctor before taking a sleeping pill, narcotic pain medicine, prescription cough medicine, a muscle relaxer, or medicine for anxiety, depression, or seizures. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using, especially: any other antipsychotic medicine; heart rhythm medicine; medicine to treat depression or mental illness; seizure medicine; tuberculosis medicine; or cough-and-cold medicine that contains a decongestant. This list is not complete. Other drugs may interact with risperidone, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
