Omnicef (cefdinir) is a semi-synthetic (partially man-made) antibiotic. It belongs to the class of drugs known as cephalosporins. Cefdinir is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections, including bronchitis, ear infections, pneumonia, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. Omnicef is available in generic form. What Are Side Effects of Omnicef? Common side effects of Omnicef include: diarrhea stomach upset nausea vomiting dizziness headache fatigue This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Omnicef may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Important Information You should not use Omnicef if you are allergic to cefdinir, or to similar antibiotics, such as Ceftin, Cefzil, Duricef, Fortaz, Keflex, Omnicef, Spectracef, Suprax, and others. To make sure Omnicef is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: kidney disease; liver disease; asthma; diarrhea caused by an antibiotic; or food or drug allergies. FDA pregnancy category B. Omnicef is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Cefdinir can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Omnicef is not approved for use by anyone younger than 6 months old. How Should I Take Omnicef? Take Omnicef exactly as it was prescribed for you. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Omnicef will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold. Omnicef can be taken with or without food. Do not share Omnicef with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Omnicef. Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Throw away any unused Omnicef after 14 days.
