Mircette (desogestrel/ethinyl estradiol) is a combination birth control pill that contains the female hormones progesterone and estrogen. It is used to prevent pregnancy. Mircette works by inhibiting ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary). This medication also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body. Mircette is a "monophasic" pill, which means that each active pill contains the same amount of hormones. Generic Mircette is not yet available in the United States. This medication may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms.
