Luvox (Fluvoxamine) is a medication that is used to treat various mental disorders. These disorders include depression, social anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Luvox is in a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by increasing the level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain, which can help to improve mood and relieve symptoms of mental disorders. Luvox is available in both brand-name and generic form. Brand-name Luvox is manufactured by Solvay Pharmaceuticals. Generic Luvox is available in both tablet and capsule form. The recommended starting dose for adults with depression is 50 mg once daily. The starting dose for social anxiety disorder is also 50 mg once daily. The recommended starting dose for obsessive-compulsive disorder is 25 mg once daily. Side effects of Luvox include nausea, headache, drowsiness, dry mouth, and upset stomach. More serious side effects of Luvox can include changes in weight, changes in sexual desire or ability, and changes in mood. Luvox should not be taken if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or if you have taken an MAOI within the past 14 days. Taking Luvox with an MAOI can cause a serious drug interaction that can lead to death. Luvox should also not be taken if you are taking or have taken a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) within the past 5 weeks. These drugs include citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozac), and paroxetine (Paxil). Taking Luvox with an SSRI can cause a serious drug interaction. Luvox may interact with other medications. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, Luvox should be used only when prescribed. This medication passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. You should not take Luvox if you are allergic to fluvoxamine or if you have: a history of bipolar disorder (manic depression); a history of seizure; a history of drug abuse or addiction; if you are taking an MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) or have taken one within the past 14 days; or if you are also taking alosetron, dolasetron, granisetron, ondansetron, or palonosetron. To make sure Luvox is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: liver disease; kidney disease; diabetes; a history of suicide attempt or thoughts; a bleeding or blood clotting disorder; seizures; a history of head injury or brain tumor; narrow-angle glaucoma; a thyroid disorder; a history of stroke; a history of heart attack, congestive heart failure, heart rhythm disorder, or low blood pressure; a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome; or if you are taking other drugs that can cause a certain type of heartbeat (QT prolongation), including amiodarone, dofetilide, procainamide, quinidine, sotalol, thioridazine, and tizanidine. Fluvoxamine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Older adults may be more likely to have side effects from this medicine. Do not give this medicine to anyone under 18 years old without medical advice.
