Imdur (isosorbide mononitrate) is a nitrate that dilates (widens) blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow through them and reducing the work load on the heart. Isosorbide mononitrate is used to prevent angina attacks (chest pain). Isosorbide mononitrate extended-release tablets are used for the treatment of chronic stable angina (chest pain that occurs most often with activity or emotional stress). Isosorbide mononitrate may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Important Information Imdur can cause serious or life-threatening side effects. Stop using this medicine and get emergency medical help if you have: chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling; sudden dizziness or headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance; feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion; swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet; a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out; pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest; nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or severe skin reaction -- fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling. Imdur can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. Do not drink alcohol. It may increase your risk of stomach bleeding. To make sure Imdur is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: congestive heart failure; coronary artery disease; a recent heart attack; a history of heart rhythm disorder; congestive heart failure; a blood disorder such as anemia (lack of red blood cells); liver disease; kidney disease; pancreatitis; if you also take a beta-blocker (such as atenolol, metoprolol, propranolol, timolol); or if you have ever had an allergic reaction to a nitrate medicine. Imdur may be only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes diet, exercise, and other medications. Follow your doctor's instructions very closely. Take Imdur exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Imdur is usually taken 3 or 4 times a day, with or without food. Follow your doctor's instructions. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time. If you use the orally disintegrating tablets, make sure your hands are dry before you handle the tablet. Place the tablet on your tongue. Allow it to dissolve in your mouth without chewing. Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. If desired, you may drink liquid to help swallow the dissolved tablet. To take the orally disintegrating tablet (Nitrostat): Keep the tablet in its blister pack until you are ready to take the medicine. Open the package and peel back the foil from the tablet blister. Do not push a tablet through the foil or you may damage the tablet. Using dry hands, remove the tablet and place it in your mouth. It will begin to dissolve right away. Do not swallow the tablet whole. Allow it to dissolve in your mouth without chewing. Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. If desired, you may drink liquid to help swallow the dissolved tablet. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time(s) every day. Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection. Imdur is only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes diet, exercise, and other medications. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions about how often to take Imdur and when to take it. Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Imdur. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
