Hytrin
Hytrin (terazosin) is an alpha-blocker that relaxes the muscles in your blood vessels, resulting in lower blood pressure. It also widens blood vessels, which can cause dizziness or fainting, especially when you first start taking it or when you start taking it again. Hytrin is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). Hytrin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Important Information You should not use Hytrin if you are allergic to terazosin. To make sure Hytrin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: heart disease or congestive heart failure; a heart rhythm disorder; coronary artery disease; a history of heart attack or stroke; low blood pressure; kidney disease; or liver disease. You may feel dizzy or light-headed when you first start taking Hytrin, or when your dose is increased. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Hytrin. Alcohol can increase the risk of dizziness or fainting. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall. Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. Visit your doctor or health care professional for regular check ups. If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using Hytrin even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure medicine for the rest of your life. Hytrin is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether terazosin passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using Hytrin. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially dizziness and fainting. These side effects can increase the risk of falling. How should I take Hytrin? Take Hytrin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Hytrin is usually taken once daily at bedtime. Follow your doctor's instructions. Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. You may feel dizzy or light-headed when you first start taking Hytrin, or when your dose is increased. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how this medicine affects you. Do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. This reduces the risk of dizzy or fainting spells. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall. Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects of Hytrin. Do not take more than your recommended dose. An overdose of terazosin can be fatal. If you use this medicine long-term, you may need frequent medical tests. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. What happens if I miss a dose? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if your next dose is less than 12 hours away. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. What happens if I overdose? Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Overdose symptoms may include severe forms of some of the side effects listed in this medication guide. What should I avoid while taking Hytrin? Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how Hytrin will affect you. Your reactions could be impaired. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall. Hytrin can affect your pupils during cataract surgery. Tell your eye surgeon ahead of time that you are using this medication. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase some of the side effects of Hytrin, and may also increase your risk of falling. Do not take more than your recommended dose. An overdose of terazosin can be fatal. Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while you are being treated with Hytrin. Avoid taking an herbal supplement containing St. John's wort. Avoid taking an antacid within 2 hours before or after you take Hytrin. Antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb Hytrin. Hytrin side effects Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have: a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out; swelling in your ankles or feet; shortness of breath; chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling; pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest; sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body; sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance; feeling like you might pass out; little or no urinating; nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); a seizure (convulsions); or penis erection that is painful or lasts 4 hours or longer (this is a rare side effect). Common Hytrin side effects may include: dizziness, drowsiness, weakness; feeling like you might pass out; headache; sleep problems (insomnia); stuffy nose, sore throat; back pain; or joint pain.
