To make sure Glucophage is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: kidney disease (your kidney function may need to be checked before you take this medicine); liver disease; heart disease, congestive heart failure; a stroke; an infection of the sinuses, lungs, or bladder; diabetes; a history of alcoholism; or if you are over 80 years old and have not had your kidney function checked. Glucophage is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Glucophage. You should not breastfeed while using Glucophage. How should I take Glucophage? Take Glucophage exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Glucophage is usually taken two or three times a day with meals. Follow your doctor's instructions. You may take the medicine with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release Glucophage XR tablet. Swallow it whole. If you cannot swallow a tablet whole, you may place it in a glass of water, milk, or juice. Stir this mixture and drink all of it right away. To make sure you get the entire dose, add a little more water to the same glass, swirl gently and drink right away. Glucophage XR tablets are slowly released into your body over time. Breaking the tablet would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time. Your blood sugar will need to be checked often, and you may need other blood tests at your doctor's office. Keep using Glucophage as directed, even if you feel well. High blood sugar can be lowered by diet and exercise, by a combination of diet and exercise, or by medication. If you need to have any type of x-ray or CT scan using a dye that is injected into your veins, you may need to temporarily stop taking Glucophage. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Throw away any unused Glucophage when it expires or when it is no longer needed.
