Floxin (ofloxacin) is an antibiotic that fights bacteria. Floxin is used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, lungs, prostate, or urinary tract (bladder and kidneys). Floxin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Important Information You should not use Floxin if you are allergic to ofloxacin or similar antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, and others). To make sure Floxin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: liver disease; kidney disease; a history of seizures; a nerve disorder; low levels of potassium in your blood; Long QT syndrome (in you or a family member); or tendon problems, bone problems, or a history of joint replacement. Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant. It could harm the unborn baby. Use effective birth control, and tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment. Ofloxacin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using Floxin. Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice. How should I take Floxin? Take Floxin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. To take Floxin for oral suspension: Open the bottle by pressing down on the cap and turning it. Add enough water to the bottle to make a total of 30 mL (1 ounce). Shake the bottle well for at least 10 seconds. Measure the medicine with a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup. The oral suspension is taken with or without food. To take Floxin tablets: The tablet is usually taken with or without food every 12 hours. Take Floxin at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating a meal. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Floxin will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold. Do not share Floxin with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Throw away any unused oral suspension after 14 days. What happens if I miss a dose? Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time. What happens if I overdose? Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Overdose symptoms may include seizure (convulsions), confusion, pale skin, and fainting. What should I avoid while taking Floxin? Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Ofloxacin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may result. Use a sunscreen (minimum SPF 15) and wear protective clothing if you must be out in the sun. Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, call your doctor before using anti-diarrhea medicine. Do not take magnesium, aluminum, or calcium within 2 hours before or after taking ofloxacin. Some antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb ofloxacin. Avoid taking an antacid within 4 hours before or after you take ofloxacin. Avoid taking any other antibiotics with ofloxacin unless your doctor has told you to. Floxin side effects Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling). Call your doctor at once if you have: severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody; fast or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, shortness of breath, and sudden dizziness (like you might pass out); a seizure (convulsions); low blood sugar--headache, hunger, sweating, irritability, dizziness, nausea, fast heart rate; or signs of tendon rupture--sudden pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, stiffness, movement problems, or a snapping or popping sound in any of your joints. Common Floxin side effects may include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; dizziness, headache, spinning sensation; mild skin rash; increased sensitivity to sunlight; or mild itching or skin irritation. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088. What other drugs will affect Floxin? Sometimes it is not safe to use certain medications together. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use, especially: a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven); an antacid that contains magnesium, aluminum, or calcium; a diuretic or "water pill"; cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune); a heart rhythm medicine such as quinidine (Quin-G) or amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone); steroids (prednisone and others); an HIV protease inhibitor such as atazanavir (Reyataz), ritonavir (Norvir), or saquinavir (Invirase); an oral diabetes medicine; or a seizure medicine such as carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Equetro, Tegretol), phenytoin (Dilant
