What is Ethionamide? Ethionamide is an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis (TB). It is also sometimes used to treat other infections such as leprosy and Crohn's disease. Ethionamide is an antibacterial agent belonging to the class of drugs known as ethionamides. It is structurally similar to isonicotinic acid, and like other drugs in its class, ethionamide is thought to work by inhibiting mycolic acid synthesis in the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Generic ethionamide is available. Side Effects The most common side effects of ethionamide are: nausea vomiting diarrhea loss of appetite headache dizziness drowsiness trouble sleeping dry mouth Less common side effects include: changes in taste tinnitus vision problems depression anxiety nervousness irritability skin rash itching hives swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat difficulty breathing or swallowing hoarseness decreased urination joint pain muscle pain If you experience any of the following side effects, call your doctor immediately: eye pain swelling, redness, or discharge from the eyes blurred vision yellowing of the skin or eyes dark urine light-colored stools upper right abdominal pain nausea vomiting loss of appetite jaundice Ethionamide may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication. Dosage The usual adult dose of ethionamide for treating tuberculosis is 15 to 25 mg/kg/day given in two or three divided doses. The usual dose for treating other infections is 250 to 500 mg two or three times daily. Ethionamide should be taken with food or milk to decrease stomach upset. If you miss a dose of ethionamide, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once. Storage Store ethionamide at room temperature, away from heat and light. Overdose If you take too much ethionamide, call your doctor or poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If ethionamide is swallowed, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If ethionamide is inhaled, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
