Digoxin is a medication used to treat heart failure and irregular heartbeats. It's also used to help certain types of heart failure. Side Effects

Mild side effects

Mild side effects of digoxin can include:

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • nausea or vomiting
  • blurred vision
  • diarrhea

Serious side effects

Serious side effects from digoxin can occur. Call your doctor right away if you have serious side effects. Call 911 if your symptoms feel life-threatening or if you think you're having a medical emergency.

Serious side effects and their symptoms can include the following:

  • confusion
  • trouble speaking
  • trouble seeing
  • yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes (jaundice)
  • unexplained weight loss
  • muscle weakness
  • bradycardia (slow heart rate)
  • tachycardia (fast heart rate)
  • arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • chest pain
  • shortness of breath
  • swelling of your ankles, feet, or legs

Risks

Digoxin carries a black box warning because it can cause serious or life-threatening side effects. A black box warning is the most serious type of warning from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Digoxin can cause life-threatening side effects if the level of the drug in your body is too high. A high level of digoxin in your body can lead to digitalis toxicity.

Signs and symptoms of digitalis toxicity can include:

  • nausea or vomiting
  • blurred vision
  • yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes (jaundice)
  • unexplained weight loss
  • muscle weakness
  • bradycardia (slow heart rate)
  • tachycardia (fast heart rate)
  • arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • chest pain
  • shortness of breath
  • swelling of your ankles, feet, or legs

If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor right away. You should also call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms of a heart attack:

  • chest pain
  • shortness of breath
  • sweating
  • nausea
  • lightheadedness

Warnings

Before taking digoxin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you're allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using digoxin, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:

  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • electrolyte problems (such as low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood)
  • heart rhythm problems (such as slow heart rate, AV block)
  • thyroid problems
  • a certain type of heart failure (sinus node dysfunction)
  • recent heart attack

To make sure digoxin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • slow heartbeats that caused you to faint
  • heart rhythm problems
  • long QT syndrome (in you or a family member)
  • pancreatitis.

Digoxin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using this medicine.

Older adults may be more likely to have side effects from this medicine. Your doctor will monitor your heart function and the level of digoxin in your blood.
