What is Cytoxan?

Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide) is a cancer medication that interferes with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. Cytoxan is used in the treatment of lymphoma, leukemia, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer, neuroblastoma, and mycosis fungoides. Cytoxan is also used to treat a certain type of kidney disease in children (nephrotic syndrome).

What are the possible side effects of cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan)?

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;
  • fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
  • nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, upper stomach pain;
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
  • urinating less than usual or not at all;
  • swelling, rapid weight gain;
  • bruising, skin changes, hair loss;
  • changes in the shape or location of body fat (especially in your arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and waist);
  • muscle pain or weakness, numb or cold feeling in your arms and legs;
  • kidney problems--little or no urinating; painful or difficult urination; swelling in your feet or ankles; feeling tired or short of breath;
  • liver problems--upper stomach pain (that may spread to your back), nausea or vomiting, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
  • low blood cell counts--fever, chills, night sweats, mouth sores, pale skin, unusual bleeding, feeling light-headed or short of breath; or
  • signs of a blood clot--sudden vision changes, confusion, slurred speech, problems with movement.

Common side effects may include:

  • mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • mild hair loss;
  • mild skin rash or itching;
  • mild headache, dizziness, tired feeling; or
  • cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat.

What is the most important information I should know about cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan)?

You should not receive this medication if you are allergic to cyclophosphamide, or if you have

  • a urination problem;
  • a blood cell disorder such as anemia (low red blood cells), leukopenia (low white blood cells), thrombocytopenia (low platelets);
  • if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

To make sure cyclophosphamide is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • kidney disease;
  • liver disease;
  • if you are receiving radiation treatment or steroids; or
  • if you have recently received a live vaccine (such as measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, polio).

Cyclophosphamide can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormone method of birth control to prevent pregnancy while taking this medicine.

Cyclophosphamide can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using this medicine.

Cyclophosphamide is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
