What is Coreg? Coreg is a medication that is used to treat heart failure and hypertension. It is also used after a heart attack. It is in a class of drugs called beta blockers. Beta blockers work by slowing the heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels. This makes it easier for the heart to pump blood and reduces the amount of work the heart has to do. Coreg is available as a generic drug. What are the side effects of Coreg? The most common side effects of Coreg are: headache dizziness tiredness nausea diarrhea constipation decreased sex drive impotence Less common side effects include: rash itching swelling difficulty breathing wheezing hives If you experience any of these side effects, contact your doctor. What is the dosage for Coreg? The recommended starting dose of Coreg for heart failure is 3.125 mg twice daily. The usual maintenance dose range is 6.25 mg to 25 mg twice daily. The recommended starting dose for hypertension is 12.5 mg once daily. The usual maintenance dose range is 25 mg to 50 mg once daily. For people who have had a heart attack, the recommended dose of Coreg is 25 mg twice daily for three days followed by an increase to the usual maintenance dose of 50 mg twice daily. How should Coreg be taken? Coreg should be taken with food. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food may decrease the chance of an upset stomach. If you miss a dose of Coreg, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time. What are the precautions when taking Coreg? Before taking Coreg, tell your doctor if you have: a heart condition kidney disease liver disease asthma diabetes You may experience dizziness when taking Coreg. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Coreg affects you. Alcohol can increase the risk of dizziness when taking Coreg. Limit alcoholic beverages. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Coreg is not recommended for use during pregnancy. This medication may be addictive. Do not take more Coreg than your doctor prescribes. What are the interactions with Coreg? Beta blockers can interact with other medications. If you are taking any other medications, talk to your doctor before taking Coreg. Some medications that can interact with Coreg include: calcium channel blockers clonidine digoxin epinephrine reserpine This is not a complete list of all the medications that can interact with Coreg. Be sure to tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
