Bystolic (nebivolol) is a beta-blocker that affects the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Bystolic is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). Bystolic may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Important Information You should not use Bystolic if you have a serious heart condition such as "AV block," very slow heartbeats, or heart failure. Call your doctor at once if you have shortness of breath, uneven heartbeats, feeling light-headed or fainting, swelling in your ankles or feet, or chest pain. Some people using this medicine have engaged in activity such as driving, eating, or sleeping while not fully awake. These people may not remember these events. If this happens to you, stop taking Bystolic and call your doctor at once. Before taking this medicine You should not use Bystolic if you are allergic to nebivolol, or if you have: a serious heart condition such as "AV block," very slow heartbeats, or heart failure; Bystolic is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether nebivolol passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using Bystolic. How should I take Bystolic? Take Bystolic exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. You may take Bystolic with or without food. Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. Your heart rate may also need to be checked using an electrocardiograph or ECG (sometimes called an EKG). If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Bystolic. While using Bystolic, you may need frequent blood tests. If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medicine even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure medicine for the rest of your life. Do not skip doses or stop using Bystolic suddenly. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Bystolic dosing information Usual Adult Dose for Hypertension: Initial dose: 2.5 mg orally once a day Maintenance dose: 5 mg to 20 mg orally once a day Maximum dose: 20 mg orally once a day Comments: -Some patients may respond to a lower initial dose.
