Aricept (donepezil) is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It works by increasing the amount of a certain substance (acetylcholine) in the brain. This may help to improve memory and thinking in people with Alzheimer's disease. Aricept is also used to treat mild to moderate dementia caused by Parkinson's disease. This medication may improve thinking and memory by increasing the amount of acetylcholine. It works by preventing the breakdown of a chemical called acetylcholine (ah seet' il koh' leen). Aricept is available in generic form. Side effects of Aricept include: dizziness, headache, runny nose, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, muscle pain, sleepiness, tired feeling, constipation, weight loss. Tell your doctor if you have serious side effects of Aricept including: slow heart rate, fainting, seizures, trouble urinating, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, unusual changes in behavior. The recommended starting dose of Aricept is 5 mg once daily. Aricept may interact with other medications. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Aricept is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It may harm a fetus. This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
