Allopurinol

Allopurinol is a medication used to treat gout. It is a generic medication, which means it is available under many different brand names. Allopurinol is also available as a lower-cost generic.

Allopurinol works by reducing the amount of uric acid in the body. Uric acid is a substance that is produced when the body breaks down purines. Purines are found in many foods, such as organ meats, seafood, and legumes. When uric acid levels are too high, it can lead to gout.

Allopurinol is available as a tablet and an oral suspension. It is typically taken once daily. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may start you at a low dose and gradually increase your dose.

Allopurinol is a prescription medication. It is not available over-the-counter (OTC).
