Aceon is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and other conditions related to cardiovascular disease. Aceon is in a class of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, or ACE inhibitors. Aceon works by relaxing blood vessels and reducing the workload of the heart. Aceon is available in tablet form and is usually taken once or twice a day.


Aceon is used to treat high blood pressure. Aceon may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Aceon include:

  • dizziness
  • cough
  • tired feeling
  • headache
  • diarrhea
  • upset stomach

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.


Before taking Aceon, tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • heart disease or congestive heart failure
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • diabetes
  • a connective tissue disease such as Marfan syndrome or systemic lupus erythematosus
  • if you are on dialysis
  • if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction

If you have any of these conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take Aceon.


Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.

Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially:

  • lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid);
  • a potassium supplement such as K-Dur, Klor-Con, or Slow-K;
  • insulin or oral diabetes medications;
  • a diuretic or "water pill";
  • aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), diclofenac (Voltaren), indomethacin, piroxicam (Feldene), nabumetone (Relafen), and others;
  • steroids (prednisone and others);
  • a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin);
  • medications for high blood pressure or a heart condition;
  • gold injections to treat arthritis; or
  • ACE inhibitors such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), fosinopril (Monopril), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), and trandolapril (Mavik).

This list is not complete and other drugs may interact with Aceon. Tell your doctor about all medications you use. This includes prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal products. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor.


If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center.

Symptoms of an Aceon overdose include:

  • drowsiness
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • fast or irregular heartbeat
  • fainting
  • feeling light-headed

Overdose symptoms may also include extreme drowsiness, cold or clammy skin, fainting, and slow or shallow breathing.


Do not share this medication with others.

Laboratory and/or medical tests (such as kidney function, potassium blood level, blood pressure) should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details.

If you have high blood pressure, do not use nonprescription products that contain stimulants. These products may include diet pills or cold medicines. Tell your doctor if you have any of these symptoms of a serious allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Aceon can affect blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar levels regularly. Ask your doctor about how to manage low blood sugar.

If you have heart failure, your doctor will closely monitor you while you are taking Aceon.

Aceon may cause live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid vaccine) to not work as well. Do not have any immunizations / vaccinations while using this medication unless your doctor tells you to.

Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise, in hot weather, or by not drinking enough fluids. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids you should drink. In some cases, drinking too much liquid can be as unsafe as not drinking enough.

To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.
